What's left behind the scenes

  • Jennifer Aniston was originally cast to play Jess, but after filming was postponed indefinitely, she left the project and was replaced by Rachel Weisz. Later, after Weisz also left, the role went to Drew Barrymore.
  • Two close-up shots in the film were shot on an iPhone 5. Director Catherine Hardwicke felt that this made the shot more intimate compared to using a regular video camera.
  • Scenes with the houseboat were filmed on the Humber barge on the Thames near St. Mary's Church during September 2014.
  • Tyson Ritter was so inspired by Toni Collette’s performance as Millie that he wrote the song “There's A Place,” which featured in their shared scene.
  • The film is based on Morwenna Banks’ radio play “Farewell,” which first aired on BBC Radio 4.
  • The hospital where the film takes place is the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre.
  • When Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette’s characters first discuss Millie’s recent cancer diagnosis and her hair loss, Jess says that being bald is normal, to which Millie replies that it’s only normal for men, babies, and aliens. Drew Barrymore’s first successful role was in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
  • Toni Collette genuinely shaved her head for the role of Millie.
