Jennifer Aniston was originally cast to play Jess, but after filming was postponed indefinitely, she left the project and was replaced by Rachel Weisz. Later, after Weisz also left, the role went to Drew Barrymore.
Two close-up shots in the film were shot on an iPhone 5. Director Catherine Hardwicke felt that this made the shot more intimate compared to using a regular video camera.

Drew Barrymore’s first successful role was in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
Toni Collette genuinely shaved her head for the role of Millie.
