Short description
Decades after Sarah Connor prevented Judgment Day, a lethal new Terminator is sent to eliminate the future leader of the resistance. In a fight to save mankind, battle-hardened Sarah Connor teams up with an unexpected ally and an enhanced super soldier to stop the deadliest Terminator yet.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During filming, director Tim Miller had to ask Linda Hamilton to stop smiling when she was shooting with weapons.
  • Brett Azar again served as Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt double.
  • The film's release coincided with the 35th anniversary of the release of 'The Terminator' (James Cameron, 1984).
  • The film is set in 2022.
  • They were looking for an 18-year-old Mexican woman for the role of Dani. Ultimately, the role went to Natalia Reyes from Colombia, who was 31 years old at the time.
  • Mackenzie Davis actually filmed the fight scene with the police officers nude. The costume designers offered her flesh-colored underwear, but the actress preferred to perform the scene without anything.
  • According to producer James Cameron, he only participated in the script work and never interfered with director Tim Miller's work, nor did he ever visit the set (at that time, he was busy filming the science fiction action film 'Avatar: The Way of Water,' 2022). He did admit, however, that when filming of the series began, his script left much to be desired, so he made changes to the script and sent them to the film's writers (sometimes this happened just a day before the scheduled shooting, i.e., practically at the last moment). In addition, when Miller had already finished editing, Cameron got involved (he is an experienced editor, and after Miller everything remained rather 'rough' and somewhat drawn out). According to Cameron, there were also major disagreements between them. Miller, in turn, stated that, yes, his relationship with Cameron was generally even, but not without scandals, because he always preferred greater freedom of action, so these two are unlikely to work together again in the future.
  • In preparation for the role, Linda Hamilton did physical exercises and followed a diet under the supervision of renowned fitness trainer Mackie Shilstone for a whole year. Due to the actress's age, Shilstone enlisted the help of his own son (a specialist in dietary supplements), as well as a pulmonologist, cardiologist, and even a manual therapist.
  • According to James Cameron, scenes of a short conversation between John Connor and his mother were filmed, but they were not included in the film.
  • At the beginning of work on the film, director Tim Miller invited a group of science fiction writers to help him and series creator James Cameron with ideas for the plot. The science fiction writers included Greg Bear, Neal Stephenson, Neal Asher, Warren Ellis, and Joe Abercrombie.
  • To assist in filming Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt doubles, the company 'Legacy Effects' created a series of rubber masks of the actor that bore an astonishing resemblance to his original face.
  • In this installment of the "Terminator" franchise, the energy sphere that appears when a person or Terminator is sent to the past is extremely cold (as evidenced by the frozen clothes on the clothesline). In all other elements of the franchise, the energy sphere produced unbearable heat.
  • Linda Hamilton was persuaded by James Cameron, her ex-husband, to return to the franchise and reprise her role as Sarah Connor. He sent her a text message three and a half pages long, half of which detailed the reasons why Hamilton should decline the offer to participate in the project, and the other half listed the reasons why she should accept it. According to Cameron, he didn't see his merit in leading Hamilton to the point where she only had to agree to filming, but in convincing her to meet with director Miller and hear his arguments.
  • Director Tim Miller and screenwriter and producer James Cameron disagreed, particularly regarding the time travel aspects of the plot. Miller initially proposed the following idea: Legion is too strong for humanity to defeat, so – in complete opposition to the films – people first traveled to the past to eliminate Legion “in the cradle” and thus change the future. Miller himself thought this idea was worthwhile, but Cameron rejected it.
  • Sarah Connor states that "Skynet" managed to send numerous Terminators from various points in the past before its destruction. After one of them killed her son, Sarah began receiving information from her secret ally – coordinates and the time of materialization of other Terminators. These coordinates, in particular, led her to the highway, where she arrived to save Grace and Dani at the last moment from the "REV-9". According to Tim Miller, a scene was not included in the film in which Sarah receives the coordinates of Grace's arrival time and location, and Sarah's car nearly crashes into Grace's energy sphere, meaning Sarah was heading there to kill Grace, but failed to do so.
  • The scene featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character’s enthusiasm for trading manufactured goods was added because Schwarzenegger genuinely enjoys interior decorating. According to Tim Miller, the script only contained half of Schwarzenegger's monologue about fabrics; he came up with the other half himself.
  • At the 15th minute of the film, Grace fires 13 times in a row at the REV-9 with a Winchester Model 1300 pump-action shotgun, although the tubular magazine of this shotgun can hold no more than 7-8 cartridges, depending on the modification.
  • At the 19th minute of the film, Grace drives up a one-way entrance ramp onto the highway in reverse in a pickup truck. In this scene, a red car can be noticed in the background traveling in the same direction as the pickup. This indicates that during filming, the pickup and the red car were actually exiting the highway in a normal direction, but the footage in the film was played in reverse. Also, in the next scene, the red car disappears.
  • When the REV-9 collides with a Ford Explorer SUV at the 20th minute of the film, a roll cage can be seen installed inside the SUV.
  • At the 22nd minute of the film, the truck carrying the REV-9 crashes and remains lying on its side on the highway. However, when the cyborg grabs onto Grace's pickup and slashes the vehicle’s tires, the truck is no longer visible in the background on the highway.
  • At the 63rd minute of the film, Sarah Connor fights with security guards on a stairwell. In one of the shots, it can be seen that during the fight, she pushes off the wall with her free right hand, although at the beginning of the scene it was shown that her hands were handcuffed behind her back.
  • At the 77th minute of the film, Dani shoots at watermelons with a pistol but doesn't hit any of the four. Shortly after, Dani breaks only two watermelons with two shots from a shotgun. In the next scene, as Sarah leaves the shooting range, it can be seen in the background that there are no watermelons left on the logs.
  • Sarah Connor says that "Skynet" managed to send numerous Terminators from various points in the past before its destruction. After one of them killed her son, Sarah began receiving information from her secret ally – coordinates and the time of materialization of other Terminators. These coordinates, in particular, led her to the highway, where she arrived to save Grace and Dani from the "REV-9" at the last moment. According to Tim Miller, a scene was cut from the film in which Sarah receives the coordinates of Grace's arrival time and location, and Sarah’s car almost crashes into Grace's energy sphere, meaning Sarah was heading there to kill Grace, but she failed.
