The title of writer David Peace's trilogy, "Red Riding," plays on Yorkshire (a county in northern England divided into North, West, and East Ridings) and the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood." The first film, set in 1974 (followed by films in 1980 and 1983), takes place in West Riding. One of the missing girls wore a red hooded jacket, and one of the criminals was known by the nickname "Wolf."
