- While filming scenes for the prison gym at Norwood School (Norwood, Ohio), swimming lessons were being held for children in the adjacent wing.
- Many of the prison scenes were filmed in the old Hamilton County Jail in Cincinnati, Ohio. This jail is also known as the Cincinnati Workhouse. It had already been closed by the time filming took place. It was built during the Civil War to hold enemy soldiers. Later, the local police used it as a jail until the late 1970s. Ultimately, the jail was closed because it was deemed 'inhumane, cruel, and bizarre' by modern prison standards.
- In the final scene, where Parnell and Skylis are talking to Malcolm in the parking lot, at the Long Beach pier, if you listen closely, you can hear the “Dumbo” suite playing on the Disneyland carousel. The film “Dumbo” (1941) is one of the earliest films from Touchstone Pictures, which is, in turn, one of the film labels of the Disney studio.
- The prison guard watching Tom Selleck’s character while he works out in the gym was a local police officer working overtime near the Norwood School, where this scene was filmed.
- After the protagonist leaves prison, his wife makes him a cup of tea. He then places it on a bookshelf, and in the next shot, the position of the cup changes.
- At the end of the film, as Parnell and Skylis drive through the parking lot looking for the truck they need, the license plate on their Ford Thunderbird changes.
- When Rainwood stabs another inmate with a homemade shank made of acrylic, the handle breaks off the weapon. In the next shot, the pointed end of the shank is visible, and in later shots, it is noticeable that the pointed end is gone.
- When Reinwood dries his hair in the bathroom, the hair dryer is white. When David Rashe shoots him, the hair dryer is gray.
