Short description
The young D'Artagnan arrives in Paris with dreams of becoming a King's musketeer. He meets and quarrels with three men, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, each of whom challenges him to a duel. D'Artagnan finds out they are musketeers and is invited to join them in their efforts to oppose Cardinal Richelieu, who wishes to increase his already considerable power over the King. D'Artagnan must also juggle affairs with the charming Constance Bonancieux and the passionate Lady De Winter, a secret agent for the Cardinal.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film was around three hours long, but it was subsequently split into two parts. The second part was released a year later under the title «The Four Musketeers». With the exception of Charlton Heston, whose character had limited screen time, all the actors were outraged by the producers' decision: none of them knew they had played in two films for the price of one. Following this precedent, all contracts concluded with actors belonging to the guild now include the so-called «Salkind clause», which specifies the number of films for which the footage will be used.
