- This is the third collaboration between Seth Rogen and Lizzy Caplan after the series "Freaks and Geeks" (1999) and the film "The Interview" (2014).
- This is the second collaboration between Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and director Jonathan Levine after the film "50/50".
- Prior to this film, Anthony Mackie and Michael Shannon co-starred in "8 Mile" (2002).
- This is the second film where Seth Rogen did not co-write the screenplay with Evan Goldberg. The first was "Hall Pass" (2011).
- Both Anthony Mackie and Michael Shannon have appeared in films based on comics. Mackie in "Captain America" based on Marvel comics, and Shannon in "Man of Steel" based on the competing DC comics.
- Before this film, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon worked together on "Premium Rush" (2012).
- The film was shot under the working title "Christmas."
- Lizzy Caplan and Helen York starred together in "Masters of Sex".
- According to director Jonathan Levin, almost all of the jokes in the film were pure improvisation, while the dramatic moments were scripted, in a screenplay he described as quite schematic.
- Some scenes were filmed in August. It was really hot for the actors on the street in sweaters.
