Short description
From Jane Austen’s novella, the beautiful and cunning Lady Susan Vernon visits the estate of her in-laws to wait out colorful rumors of her dalliances and to find husbands for herself and her daughter. Two young men, handsome Reginald DeCourcy and wealthy Sir James Martin, severely complicate her plans.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Jane Austen's novel "Lady Susan," which was not published during the author's lifetime. "Lady Susan" is the title given by Jane Austen's nephew to her anonymous manuscript when her family finally allowed it to be published in 1871.
  • "Love & Friendship" is the title chosen by the film crew and, in particular, director Whit Stillman. It was decided that the title "Love & Friendship," borrowed from her early story "Love and Freindship" (the author's original spelling preserved), was more suitable for the film with its expanded plot and new characters.
  • Casting began in London in the fall of 2013 with Morfydd Clark, who had just finished a theatrical production. She was the first actress to be cast in the role of Frederica.
  • This is the second film featuring Whit Stillman, Chloë Sevigny, and Kate Beckinsale working together. Chloë Sevigny starred in Whit Stillman's 'Last Days of Disco.' Kate Beckinsale was her co-star.
  • Kate Beckinsale played the lead role in the British miniseries 'Emma,' based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen.
