What's left behind the scenes

  • Work on the film began in 1996, when a contract for the screenplay and filming of the film was signed with Ivan Reitman. In January 2001, Silver Pictures approached Todd Ellrott with a proposal to write a screenplay for a Wonder Woman film. In August 2003, Ellrott was replaced by Laeta Kalogridis. In March 2005, Joss Whedon took on the screenplay with the condition that he would then direct the film, but in February 2007 he left the project due to creative differences with the studio. On November 24, 2014, Michelle MacLaren was confirmed as the director, and on March 13, 2015, she also left due to creative differences.
  • The first film with a superheroine in the lead role since 2005, when Rob Bowman's science fiction action film "Elektra" was released.
  • Kate Beckinsale, Sandra Bullock, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Biel, Eva Green, Christina Hendricks, Kristen Stewart, and Cobie Smulders were considered for the role of Wonder Woman.
  • In 2005, Angelina Jolie was offered the role of Wonder Woman, but the actress declined. Ten years later, the film company considered offering Jolie to direct the film.
  • Liam Hemsworth and Alexander Skarsgård were considered for the role of Steve Trevor.
  • The early versions of the plot featured the sorceress Circe, for which Eva Green was cast. This character was later replaced by Dr. Poison, played by Elena Anaya.
  • Director Nicolas Winding Refn expressed interest in working on the film and envisioned Christina Hendricks in the role of Wonder Woman.
  • Several campaigns were organized to support casting Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the series (1975-1979), in a cameo role in the film, but nothing came of it.
  • Steve Trevor's watch is a pocket watch with a strap for wearing on the wrist. At the time, everyone used pocket watches with a chain, however, in the active army, where synchronicity and coordination of actions were often necessary during maneuvers and large-scale operations, it was more convenient to wear the watch on the wrist. After the war, wearing a watch on the wrist became fashionable among civilians.
  • The scenes on the island were filmed in southern Italy – in the province of Matera in the Basilicata region and at Castel del Monte castle near the city of Andria.
  • Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) jokingly calls Diana's homeland Themyscira a paradise island. This is a reference to the original name of Diana's homeland (Amazon Island) in the comics. When comic book authors significantly changed the Wonder Woman character in the 1980s, the name Amazon Island was changed to Themyscira. Since then, in all appearances of Wonder Woman on screen or in print, her homeland has been called exclusively Themyscira.
  • At the very beginning of the film, on the license plate of a Wayne Entertainment truck, you can make out the letters JL. They stand for Justice League.
  • Director Patty Jenkins admitted that she drew inspiration from the works of Wonder Woman creator William M. Marston (1893-1947) and comic book writer and artist George Pérez while filming the movie.
  • An Alamo Drafthouse cinema in Austin banned men from attending two screenings of "Wonder Woman," designating them as "women-only" showings.
  • Zack Snyder played an episodic role as a World War I soldier.
  • According to the comics from the 2011 rebooted series called The New 52, Wonder Woman is a demigoddess and the daughter of Zeus.
  • The first words spoken to Wonder Woman by Eugene 'Brave Stone' are in the Blackfoot Native American language (named for the color of their moccasins). They translate to "Hello, my name is Napi." Napi is a deity in that people's legends, known for his ingenuity.
  • In the scene where Diana jumps towards the tower holding the Godkiller sword, a bull appears on the cliff behind her. In ancient Greek myths, Zeus often takes the form of a bull.
  • The scene where Diana saves Steve from a bullet is borrowed from the first Superman film, where Clark saved Lois in exactly the same way.
  • At the end of the film, Diana learns that her father is Zeus. Thus, it turns out that Ares was Diana's half-brother. However, in Greek mythology, Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and, consequently, the granddaughter of Zeus.
  • In the Belgian village, the church dome is not topped with a cross.
  • Work on the film continued since 1996, when a contract for the screenplay and filming was signed with Ivan Reitman. In January 2001, Silver Pictures approached Todd Elliot with a proposal to write a screenplay for a Wonder Woman film. In August 2003, Elliot was replaced by Laeta Kalogridis. In March 2005, Joss Whedon took on the screenplay with the condition of then directing the film, but in February 2007, he left the project due to creative differences with the studio. On November 24, 2014, Michelle McLaren was confirmed as director, but she also left on March 13, 2015, due to creative differences.
