What's left behind the scenes
- In 1978, a dam break on the river resulted in the deaths of many lions involved in the filming, the sets were washed away, and almost all of the filmed material was destroyed.
- This film took 11 years to shoot.
- During filming, lions injured director, screenwriter, and actor Noel Marshall, actresses Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith (Hedren's daughter), who played the leading roles, as well as cinematographer Jan de Bont. Melanie Griffith required plastic surgery as a result. Marshall was hospitalized; it took him several years to fully recover from his injuries.
