• Chloë Grace Moretz was the only actress who auditioned for the role of Cassie.
• Ty Sheridan, Nick Robinson, and Mitchell Hope auditioned for the role of Ben Parish.
• Some episodes of the film were shot on Cotton Avenue in Macon, Georgia. While preparing the street for scenes depicting a city after an alien attack, the film crew went overboard. Several nearby shops and cafes were damaged during a bus explosion. Residents of the area subsequently called the city administration demanding the debris be cleared.
• On August 31, 2015, Chloë Grace Moretz announced that she had read the book the film would be based on three times. She also stated that she would be happy to play the character she liked the most.
• According to a press leak, Viggo Mortensen, Russell Crowe, Jason Clarke, Matthias Schoenaerts, James Badge Dale, and Ethan Hawke were considered for the role of Colonel Vosh. Guy Pearce, Demian Bichir, Luke Evans, Ben Foster, Joel Edgerton, and Jared Leto were also considered. The role ultimately went to Liev Schreiber.
