What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's screenplay is based on the novel by Michael J. Tagias and Casey Sherman, "The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue".
  • An old model police car used in the film was borrowed from the Orleans, Massachusetts, city police.
  • In 2011, the U.S. Coast Guard named a 46-meter high-speed boat of a new design after Boatswain's Mate Bernard Webber of CG 36500. These boats were the first vessels to be named after enlisted personnel.
  • Filming took place primarily in the town of Chatham, Massachusetts.
  • Ben Foster and Eric Bana played "Navy SEALs" in the film "Lone Survivor" (2013), and Kyle Gallner played a Marine in "Sniper" (2014).
  • Chris Pine and Eric Bana starred together in "Star Trek" (2009).
  • Chris Pine and Holliday Grainger have both previously appeared in films from "Disney": Pine in "Into the Woods" (2014) and "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004), and Grainger in "Cinderella" (2015).
  • Casey Affleck and Josh Stewart worked together on "Interstellar" (2014). Stewart did not appear on screen, but voiced the robot CASE.
  • Kyle Gallner and Michael Raymond-James both appeared in the popular television series "The Walking Dead" (2010) on "AMC", but in different seasons. Gallner played Zack in season 4, and Raymond-James played Dave in season 2.
  • Casey Affleck and Ben Foster worked together on "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (2013).
  • Chris Pine and Ben Foster starred together in "Deepwater Horizon" (2016).
  • Of all the team involved in rescuing the sailors of the "Pendleton", only Captain Third Rank (retired) Mel "Gus" Gutro and Andy Fitzgerald were still alive at the time of filming. On November 10th and 11th, 2014, they visited the set and observed the filming of scenes depicting the rescue of the surviving sailors of the "Pendleton".
  • The CG 36500 boat, launched by the Coast Guard vessel to rescue the crew of the tanker "Pendleton", was, as of 2016, maintained in perfect condition in Rock Harbor, Orleans, Massachusetts.
