- The film is based on Mary Map's 2005 book, “Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power.”
- At the request of Cate Blanchett, filming was organized in Australia. The actress wanted to be closer to her family during filming.
- Work on the film began as early as 2007.
- James Vanderbilt's directorial debut.
- The CBS television network, which fired journalist Mary Mapes (played by Cate Blanchett in the film) who was involved in independent investigations due to the scandal depicted in the film, refused to provide airtime for the film's advertising.
