Short description
Maud Bailey, a brilliant English academic, is researching the life and work of poet Christabel La Motte. Roland Michell is an American scholar in London to study Randolph Henry Ash, now best-known for a collection of poems dedicated to his wife. When Maud and Roland discover a cache of love letters that appear to be from Ash to La Motte, they follow a trail of clues across England, echoing the journey of the couple over a century earlier.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A significant portion of Church Street in Whitby was decorated to resemble a fishing village from the 18th and 19th centuries. Gwyneth Paltrow insisted that the set be cordoned off so she wouldn't be visible to the small crowd of onlookers who had gathered to watch the filming. Jeremy Northam approached the onlookers during a break and answered their questions. Furthermore, Gwyneth Paltrow was invited to a meeting with the town fathers and a tour of the city, which the mayor promised to conduct personally, but she declined the invitation.
  • Some of the film's characters incorporate traits of multiple historical figures. The character played by Lena Headey, for example, painted in a technique similar to that of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly the artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). This same character died by stuffing stones into her dress, walking into the water, and drowning. Almost the same thing was done in 1941 by British writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), who, like Headey’s character, had been in a love affair with another woman for many years.
