What's left behind the scenes

  • Additional monologues were written by Francis Ford Coppola.
  • Roger Corman wanted to cast Boris Karloff in the film, but he declined the offer due to health reasons, so Lon Chaney Jr. appeared in the picture instead.
  • The film is based on Howard Lovecraft's story "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." But since Lovecraft was little known at the time, the studio claimed for promotional purposes that the film was based on the works of the more famous Edgar Allan Poe. This allowed the film to be included in Corman's popular series of films based on Poe's works.
