Short description
Based on Mary Shelley's novel, "Frankenstein" tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a promising young doctor who, devastated by the death of his mother during childbirth, becomes obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. His experiments lead to the creation of a monster, which Frankenstein has put together with the remains of corpses. It's not long before Frankenstein regrets his actions.

What's left behind the scenes

  • “Frankenstein” is a film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.” Despite some deviations from the original literary work, it is the closest film version to Shelley’s “Frankenstein”.
  • In one scene, Robert De Niro was supposed to bite an extra played by Fay Ripley. The scene was filmed, but it did not make the final cut.
  • Christopher Lambert was considered for one of the supporting roles, but was replaced by another actor shortly before filming began.
  • Kenneth Branagh (director) insisted that the word "monster" not be used in the film's credits.
  • Robert De Niro specifically communicated with people who had experienced severe physical trauma in order to learn how to speak like someone in a similar condition.
  • Gérard Depardieu turned down the role of the monster.
  • Filming period: October 1993 – February 1994.
