What's left behind the scenes

  • Jim Jarmusch's project was originally titled "Dead Flowers".
  • Jim Jarmusch spent two and a half weeks writing the film's screenplay.
  • Jim Jarmusch wrote the role of Don Johnston specifically for Bill Murray, whom he admires. He had initially planned to feature Bill in another film, but changed his plans.
  • The jazz composition "Yedermo Sew," which continuously accompanies Don Johnston during his odyssey, is a minor version of Horace Silver's "Song For My Father."
  • Jarmusch dedicated the film to the late French film director Jean Eustache.
  • At the end of the film, a car passes by Don, from which a young man carefully examines him. The young man is played by Bill Murray's son, Homer.
  • Initially, the project was called "Dead Flowers".
  • It took Jim Jarmusch two and a half weeks to write the screenplay for the film.
  • Jim Jarmusch wrote the role of Don Johnston specifically for Bill Murray, whom he is a fan of. He had initially planned to cast Bill in another film, but changed his plans.
  • According to Bill Murray (who played Don Johnston), after filming was completed, he seriously considered ending his acting career, believing that he could never play anyone better.
  • Bill Murray only agreed to star in the film on the condition that the shooting location be within an hour's drive of his home in New York State. Jarmusch agreed, and filming took place either in New York City itself or in northern New Jersey.
  • Jim Jarmusch asked the four actresses playing the main roles to write a version of the letter in the pink envelope from the perspective of their characters, and used excerpts from all four versions in the film.
  • The project was initially titled “Dead Flowers”.
