The film is based on Lewis Carroll's tale "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865).
Many scenes in the film directly replicate illustrations by Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), the first illustrator of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1862-1865). (Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-1898).
The scene where Alice walks down the corridor and grows larger and larger was filmed in a specially constructed corridor that decreased in size.
Martin Short's head was digitally enlarged threefold to more closely resemble the March Hare from John Tenniel's original illustrations.
The image of the Cheshire Cat was created using a combination of puppets (for the body) and computer graphics (Whoopi Goldberg's face was scanned and overlaid onto the image).
The film is based on Lewis Carroll's fairy tale "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865).
