Filming began on August 6, 2002. It took place in Los Angeles, New York, and at Niagara Falls. Filming wrapped up in early autumn of the same year.
The screenplay for this film was purchased by Universal Studios in 2000 for $1 million, an extraordinarily high price for the time.
Robert De Niro was originally considered for the role of God, but Morgan Freeman ultimately played it.
During filming, a camera crane fell due to a strong gust of wind, nearly crushing actress Jennifer Aniston, who was standing with her back to it and unaware. However, her co-star Jim Carrey, noticing the falling crane, quickly pushed Aniston aside and genuinely saved her from a tragic outcome.
The film is based on the book "Almighty Me" by Robert Bausch.
When the film was released on video and DVD, God's number was slightly changed to 555-0123, as the real number 776-2323 became blocked after the film's release due to the huge number of incoming calls.
This film was officially banned in Egypt due to its "religious content".
The number of takes for some scenes in the film exceeded 30. Jim Carrey repeatedly insisted on reshooting the same scenes.
The phone number of God, played by Morgan Freeman, was a real, working number (usually, films use the 555 prefix for phone numbers), which resulted in the number's owners being bombarded with calls. Before the film's release on video, the number was changed to 555-0123. After that, Bruce began using a number owned by a radio station in Colorado and a woman in Florida, and they were also plagued by callers hoping to chat with God. To solve the problem, the producers purchased both numbers used in the film.
The film's plot unfolds in Buffalo, New York, and the town square was filmed on location directly next to the Universal Pictures studio. It was here that scenes from the famous 'Back to the Future' trilogy (Robert Zemeckis, 1985, 1989, 1990) with the clock tower were also filmed. The tower is clearly visible in the riot scene.
