When the film was released, Sylvester Stallone was the same age (69) as Burgess Meredith was when "Rocky" was released (1976).
To maintain tradition, Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa) insisted that Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) wear the same American flag-colored trunks that Apollo Creed wore in "Rocky" (1976), and that Rocky himself wore in "Rocky III" (1982) and "Rocky IV" (1985).
This is the first film in the "Rocky" series not scripted by Sylvester Stallone. The screenplay was written by Ryan Coogler in collaboration with Aaron Covington. Coogler and Covington consulted with Stallone during the writing process.
The film was released on November 25, 2015, exactly 40 years after the day the plot of the first film in the series begins.
During filming, Sylvester Stallone once had to break up a fight between two boxers.
Michael B. Jordan, who played the main role, was born in 1987, two years after the "death" of Apollo Creed.

"The previous film was difficult for me. I was so glad that the whole story was over that I thought at the time: 'Okay, we're done. There's no need to go back to this.' So, I turned Coogler down." The director's persistence eventually prevailed.
The scenes in Adrian's restaurant were filmed at the "The Victor" cafe in Philadelphia.
Michael B. Jordan is very grateful to Sylvester Stallone for his moral support. "Sly really helped me. He advised me not to go out of my way to uphold the high reputation of the other Rocky films, but simply to be myself," the actor said.
It was not easy for Sylvester Stallone to portray the aging Rocky Balboa. "It's hard to put into words how you feel when you sit down in front of the makeup artist as one person, and after an hour and a half you get up from it as a frail old man," said the 69-year-old actor. "After all, we all age every day. I somehow especially acutely felt that time is passing..."
Director Ryan Coogler wanted to preserve the storyline of the father-son relationship in this film. "Boxing is a sport where the support of another person is extremely important," he later said. "There is a very close connection between a boxer and his trainer. We know this from the example of Tyson and Cus D'Amato. We saw it in the relationship between Rocky and Mick. It's a special connection, and I wanted to preserve it in the new film."
This is the first film since "The Wire" (2002) to feature Wood Harris and Michael B. Jordan together.
The film's script originally consisted of 204 pages, but some things were cut, and the ending was rewritten several times. Two different endings to the film were shot.
Phylicia Rashad and Tessa Thompson starred together in this film. The actresses previously worked together on Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls" (2010). Rashad and Michael B. Jordan worked together on the series "Cosby" (1996), where Rashad played the main role and Jordan appeared as a guest star.
While developing Adonis's fighting style, Michael B. Jordan drew inspiration from recordings of fights by renowned boxers such as Timothy Bradley, Pernell Whitaker, and Andre Ward. Andre Ward appeared in "Creed" as Danny Wheeler.
The film takes place in 1998 and 2015.
Filming of several training scenes took place inside an empty store in Philadelphia, which was converted into a gym.
Tessa Thompson plays the role of Adonis's girlfriend, a singer-songwriter. Thompson and composer Ludwig Göransson collaborated on writing nine songs for the film.
