What's left behind the scenes

  • The script was written specifically for Alan Rickman, so even his character was originally named Alan. When the actor agreed to star, the name was changed to Alex.
  • Alan Rickman (1946-2016) read the script and suggested casting Sigourney Weaver in the role of Linda. He even called Weaver and told her she should read the script because he felt one of the roles in the story was perfect for her.
  • In preparation for her role, Sigourney Weaver spent a lot of time with Ross Blackbern, a British woman with autism who is unable to live independently and cannot read or write. Her character shares many traits with Ross, such as a fondness for jumping on a trampoline and all things shiny and sparkling. Blackbern speaks publicly about what it's like to live with autism.
  • The film was shot in 72 days in the Canadian province of Ontario. During filming in winter, unexpectedly warm weather caused the snow to melt, and to avoid interrupting filming, snow had to be brought in from other areas, as well as artificial snow being used on set.
  • Screenwriter Angela Pell borrowed many traits of the character played by Sigourney Weaver from her own autistic son.
