Short description
In the closing days of WWII, a Japanese soldier afflicted with tuberculosis is abandoned by his company and left to wander the Philippine island of Leyte.
What's left behind the scenes
- A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Shohei Ooka.
- All the actors playing Japanese soldiers ate very little, didn't wash their hair, and didn't clean their teeth or nails for authenticity, which is why nurses were constantly on duty on set to prevent any incidents. Eiji Funakoshi was the only one not forbidden to restrict his diet and not subject to constant medical supervision. However, Funakoshi, in order to better get into the role, secretly stopped eating altogether, and the day came when he collapsed from hunger on set, after which filming was suspended for two weeks.
