Short description
Members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division are fighting for their country amidst the rugged terrain of Bastogne, Belgium, in December 1944. Holley and his American compatriots have already seen one of their own, Roderigues, perish under enemy fire. The men try to rebuff another series of Nazi attacks, but what they really need is a change in the weather. Without clear skies, they'll never get the air support they need.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Producer Dor Schary (1905-1980) managed to ensure that filming wrapped up five days ahead of schedule. He ordered the construction of 25 sets in one soundstage in advance and the installation of props on them, instructed set designer Hans Peters (1894-1980) to meticulously paint the details of the locations and scenes that would be filmed in those settings, and to indicate the preliminary placement of the cameras, and then distributed copies of the resulting drawings to director William A. Wellman (1896-1975) and cinematographer Paul Vogel (1899-1975).
  • Screenwriter and producer Robert Pirosh (1910-1989) wrote the screenplay based on the recollections of an infantryman who participated in the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 – January 1945). Pirosh himself did not fight as part of the 101st Airborne Division, but wanted to write a script that accurately reflected what had happened.
  • Twenty veterans of the 101st Airborne Division, who fought in the vicinity of Bastogne, Belgium, trained the actors and appeared as extras.
