Mira Nair, an American director of Indian descent, decided to film "Queen of Katwe" after making a documentary about Robert Katende, Fiona Mutesi's coach.
At a charity auction to raise funds for Maisha Film Lab (a non-profit organization in Uganda that supports emerging filmmakers), Ugandan model and designer Sylvia Owori purchased the right to play an extra in the film.
The film features young actors from South Africa and Uganda.
Filming took place in Uganda and South Africa.
