What's left behind the scenes
- A scene with nuns and a life-sized icon of Jesus Christ was cut from the film during editing, and the footage with this scene disappeared somewhere. Film critic Mark Kermode discovered it many years later. Ken Russell (1927-2011) wanted to insert this scene into the director's cut of the film, but it turned out that the film company "Warner Brothers" did not want to release a director's cut. Kermode inserted this scene into a documentary about Russell, and then into the complete DVD version of the film.
- Derek Jarman's (1942-1994) sets were inspired by the sets of Fritz Lang's (1890-1976) science fiction film "Metropolis" (1927). Director Ken Russell insisted on these futuristic images.
- The role of Sister Jeanne was offered to actress Glenda Jackson, but she declined the offer.
