Based on the novel of the same name by Laurence Wright.
Alex Gibney filmed the headquarters of the Church of Scientology using an aerial drone. This allowed him to film the facility without needing permission.
Approximately 160 lawyers were involved in the film's creation process to avoid legal disputes with the "Church of Scientology".
At the eighth minute of the film, when Paul Haggis talks about his beginnings, a clip is shown claiming it is London (Ontario, Canada). In reality, this moment shows Hamilton (Ontario, Canada).
