Based on a true story.
The film was shot on a very old bridge in Elora, Ontario, Canada, which had long been closed and was refurbished specifically for the filming. Now it serves as a pedestrian bridge.
The Allegheny County Jail featured in the film ceased to operate as a penal institution in 1995. It now houses offices of the county court system. The building is on the official list of US landmarks.
Ken Wahl was on his way to meet Diane Keaton to discuss the role of Ed when he was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained a head injury (which required stitches). Mel Gibson played the role of Ed.
