What's left behind the scenes

  • For some time, actress Amanda Seyfried was seriously considered for the role of Belle.
  • Ewan McGregor once said that he was very worried during filming because he found it difficult to speak with a French accent. The actor even consulted his French wife on this matter. McGregor later admitted that he never quite mastered the accent.
  • Emma Thompson, who played Mrs. Potts, and Hattie Morahan, who plays Agatha, both played Elinor Dashwood – in Ang Lee's film *Sense and Sensibility* (1995) and the BBC television series (2008) based on Jane Austen's novel of the same name (1775-1817).
  • Emma Watson, who played Belle, Luke Evans, who played Gaston, and Emma Thompson, who played Mrs. Potts, were all born on the same day, April 15th. Emma Watson was born in 1990, Luke Evans in 1979, and Emma Thompson in 1959.
  • This is Kevin Kline’s third film with Disney, where he plays Maurice. He voiced Captain Phoebus in the animated film *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, 1996) and its sequel, *The Hunchback of Notre Dame II* (Bradley Raymond, 2002). In 1991, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise directed the animated film *Beauty and the Beast*. It is also the third Disney film featuring Kline that is set in France.
  • Over 8,700 candles (or 2.65 kilometers of wax) were used in the sets during the production of the film.
  • Half of the ballroom in the Beast’s castle, which covers 1115 square meters, is made of artificial marble, and its design is based on the pattern of the ceiling in the Benedictine monastery located in the Braunau-in-Ror abbey in Germany. Ten glass chandeliers illuminating the ballroom, each measuring 2x4 meters, were constructed based on real chandeliers from the French royal palace of Versailles, covered with glaze imitating frost, and draped with fabric.
  • Approximately 1500 roses were grown or purchased during filming for research purposes or for use in the sets.
  • It took over 15 weeks to create the enchanted forest of living trees and shrubs surrounding the Beast’s castle, covered with the ice of the lake and 20,000 icicles that decorated the film set.
  • Over 12,000 hours of work were spent creating Belle’s yellow ballgown. In addition, costume designers used approximately 55 meters of weightless organza, 914 meters of thread, and 2160 Swarovski crystals for the dress.
  • Froufrou, the dog of Madame de Garderobe (Odra McDonald) and Maestro Cadenza (Stanley Tucci), is played by a dog named Gizmo, who is actually a pet from one of the oldest and most famous animal shelters in the UK.
  • Some lyrics from the songs “Gaston” and “Belle and the Beast,” written by Howard Ashman for the animated film but not performed in 1991, will be heard for the first time in songs recorded for the film adaptation.
  • The lanterns on the terrace, the staircase in the Beast’s castle, and the pink colonnade on the castle grounds are a tribute to the avant-garde 1946 version of the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast,” directed by French filmmaker Jean Cocteau, whose film served as inspiration for Bill Condon.
  • Emma Thompson, who plays Mrs. Potts, and Hattie Morahan, who plays Agatha, both played Elinor Dashwood – in Ang Lee’s film “Sense and Sensibility” (1995) and the BBC television series (2008) based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name (1775-1817).
  • This is Kevin Kline's third film for Disney, where he plays Maurice. He voiced Captain Phoebus in the animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, 1996) and its sequel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame II” (Bradley Raymond, 2002). In 1991, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise directed the animated film “Beauty and the Beast.” Also, this is the third Disney film starring Kline that takes place in France.
