Short description
A true story of politics and art in the 1930s USA, centered around a leftist musical drama and attempts to stop its production.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was originally planned for release in 1984, but financial circumstances prevented this. That version was to be directed by Orson Welles (1915-1985) from a screenplay he had written himself. Rupert Everett would have played Welles in his youth, and Amy Irving would have played the role of his first wife. The screenplay written by Welles was published after his death. The director of that version, Tim Robbins, claims he did not read Welles' script.
  • Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) is briefly glimpsed in one of the shots. The film is set in 1936, when he was still alive.
