Short description
A Japanese Yakuza gangster's deadly existence in his homeland gets him exiled to Los Angeles, where he is taken in by his little brother and his brother's gang.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The bodies of those killed in the headquarters at the end of the film are arranged in such a way that they form a "kanji" symbol, meaning death. (Kanji are Chinese characters used in modern Japanese writing.)
  • Observing a clear interest in the Yakuza in Europe, Takeshi Kitano wrote a screenplay about them and chose Los Angeles as the setting to emphasize the contrast between the characters and their unfamiliar surroundings.
  • This is the only film that Takeshi Kitano shot in the United States. The director stated that he did not like the film's ending and regretted this "Hollywood adventure," which did not live up to his expectations. Since then, Kitano has vowed never to shoot films outside of Japan.
  • During filming, there were constant creative disagreements between Takeshi Kitano and Masaya Kato. It even came to the point where Kitano would simply yell at the actor.
