What's left behind the scenes
- Filming finished several weeks later than planned, which in turn caused some friction with the creative team of Michael Curtiz's (1886-1962) drama "Casablanca" (1942), which also starred Claude Rains (1889-1967) and Paul Henreid (1908-1992). Rains finished filming in this movie on June 3, 1942, and by half-past ten in the morning the next day he was already playing his first scene in "Casablanca".
- Preparing for the role of Charlotte before her transformation, Bette Davis (1908-1989) asked costume designer Orry-Kelly (1897-1964) to create special pads for her that would make her appear larger and more massive, and then asked makeup artist Perc Westmore (1904-1970) to give her thicker eyebrows. Her appearance in the film was the result of a compromise; she wanted to look even less attractive, but at some point producer Hal B. Wallis (1899-1986) decided that was enough.
