Short description
William Munny is a retired, once-ruthless killer turned gentle widower and hog farmer. To help support his two motherless children, he accepts one last bounty-hunter mission to find the men who brutalized a prostitute. Joined by his former partner and a cocky greenhorn, he takes on a corrupt sheriff.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is dedicated to directors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, under whom Eastwood worked on films that brought him wide recognition and had a significant impact on all his subsequent work.
  • The film's shooting period lasted only 39 days, and filming even finished 4 days ahead of schedule.
  • The original script envisioned a voiceover accompanying the opening and closing scenes of the film. However, Clint Eastwood decided to remove it and replace it with standard text.
  • It took the filmmakers only 32 days to build the sets for the town of Big Whiskey.
  • After acquiring the film's script, Clint Eastwood waited about ten years to reach the appropriate age to play William Munny.
  • The name Schofield Kid means "Boy with a Schofield," referring to the Kid's revolver model (Smith & Wesson No. 3 — Schofield Revolver).
  • "Baby" Bill beat "The Englishman" Bob during the day, but the bleeding continues and is still visible in the evening scene at the police station.
  • During the shootout in the bar, where William goes to avenge Ned, it is visible how a blood pack bursts on the young sheriff's assistant, but he shows no reaction to the "gunshot wound." Only in the next scene does Will kill him.
  • Filming took place from August 26 to November 12, 1991.
  • Clint Eastwood’s mother, Ruth Wood, played an extra. She portrayed one of the passengers boarding the train. The actress was uncomfortable in her dress, and a relatively short scene took a whole day to film, but it was ultimately cut from the movie, for which Eastwood apologized to his mother. As compensation, he invited her to the Academy Awards ceremony with him, and upon receiving the award (the film won four Oscars and was nominated for five more), he thanked her in his speech.
  • Filming took place in Calgary, Canada, and the weather was surprisingly dry, so almost all the rain had to be created artificially. The scene in which Clint Eastwood’s character comes to and recovers after being beaten was not in the original script.
  • Ruth Wood, Clint Eastwood's mother, played an extra in the film (she portrayed one of the passengers boarding the train). She was wearing an uncomfortable dress, and although the short scene took all day to film, it was ultimately cut from the movie, for which Eastwood apologized to his mother. As compensation, he invited her to accompany him to the Academy Awards ceremony, and upon receiving the statuette (the film won four Oscars and was nominated for five more), he thanked her in his speech.
  • “Baby” Bill beat “The Englishman” Bob during the day, but the bleeding continues into the evening scene at the police station.
  • During the shootout in the bar, where William goes to avenge Ned, a young deputy sheriff's blood pack explodes, but he shows no reaction to the 'gunshot wound'. It is only in the next scene that Will kills him.
