Mia Wasikowska and Clémence Poésy were considered for the lead female role.
Initially, Christian Bale was planned to play one of the key roles in the film, but ultimately he limited himself to three days of filming, and the role intended for him was played by Michael Fassbender.
According to Ryan Gosling, the filming took place without a script.
Production of the film began immediately after the completion of filming for Terrence Malick's previous project, 'Knight of Cups,' which also starred Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, and Christian Bale.
