Short description
Investigative journalist Eddie Brock attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of Venom, a violent, super powerful alien symbiote. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organization looking for a symbiote of their own.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Tom Hardy's son, Louis Thomas Hardy, is a fan of Venom. Hardy took on the role to please his son. Louis also helped his father prepare for the role, as he was not very familiar with the character.
  • Tom Hardy not only played Eddie Brock, but also voiced Venom himself.
  • Initially, the film was conceived as a direct spin-off of 'Spider-Man 3: Enemy in Reflection' (2007), although it was announced that Topher Grace would not return to his role. Soon after the franchise rebooted, the project was announced again. Chris Zilka expressed his interest in the role of Flash Thompson. When 'The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage' (2014) was released, Sony announced that the Venom film would be part of their Spider-Man cinematic universe. Shortly after, Sony and Marvel decided to collaborate on the Spider-Man franchise. The result was a new reboot of the franchise and a postponed spin-off about Venom. Although Sony wanted to continue working on its spin-offs to 'Spider-Man', no future projects were heard about until February 2018.
  • The events of this film take place in a world not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • The film's release coincided with the 30th anniversary of Venom's first appearance in the comics.
  • Tom Hardy noted that when voicing Venom, he attempted to imitate the voice of James Brown to some extent.
  • The character of Dora, played by Jenny Slate, was created specifically for the film.
  • When preparing for his role, Tom Hardy drew inspiration from Woody Allen, Conor McGregor, and Redman.
  • The filmmakers noted that they drew inspiration from the works of directors John Carpenter and David Cronenberg, as well as from the films "An American Werewolf in London" (1981) and "Ghostbusters" (1984).
  • Initially, it was intended to film the movie with an R rating (persons under the age of 17 are only allowed if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian), but it was decided that such a rating would create problems for future crossovers with Spider-Man, so the film was made aiming for a PG-13 rating (children under 13 are not advised to watch).
  • Tom Hardy recorded his lines during pre-production, after which, in scenes where Brock talks to the symbiote, his lines were played back to him in his headphones.
  • Initially, it was planned that Tom Hardy would use "motion capture" technology while playing Venom, however, this idea had to be abandoned because Hardy’s eyes, teeth, and tongue did not match Venom’s face, in addition, the actor’s height should be more than 2 meters to match the character’s parameters. Therefore, Venom in the film is entirely a product of computer technology. Tom Hardy played Venom in Brock's costume in front of the camera, after which an image of Venom was superimposed on his silhouette.
  • Tom Hardy's son, Louis Thomas Hardy, is a Venom fan. Hardy took on the role to please his son. Louis also helped his father prepare for the role, as he was not well acquainted with the character.
  • The events of the film unfold in a world unrelated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
