• The film is based on Stieg Larsson's novel "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" (Luftslottet som sprängdes, 2007).
• A literal translation of the film's title is "The Air Castle That Exploded".
• Noomi Rapace began training approximately six months before filming started, studying various fighting techniques in boxing, not because it was required by the script, but to make her own body appear more androgynous (this was a result of the psychological portrait of her character). In addition, Rapace worked with a nutritionist to look as thin as possible, underwent numerous piercings, and learned to ride a motorcycle (she obtained her license simultaneously with the start of filming).
• The film was shot simultaneously with filming of Daniel Alfredson's thriller "The Girl Who Played with Fire" (2009).
• Initially, Dr. Anders Jonasson was named Anders Jacobsson in honor of a real doctor and friend of Stieg Larsson (1954-2004). Jacobsson voiced claims to Larsson's father and brother regarding Eva Gabrielsson and her share of the inheritance, and they retaliated by changing the character's name.
