Short description
A young Jewish American man endeavors—with the help of eccentric, distant relatives—to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II—in a Ukrainian village which was ultimately razed by the Nazis.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the debut novel by American writer Jonathan Safran Foer, “Everything Is Illuminated.” In 1999, he visited Ukraine, seeking to learn more about his grandfather’s life, and this trip inspired the author to write the novel and, to a certain extent, served as its foundation. Safran Foer makes a brief appearance in the film – he is the man who writes the titles of the chapters into which the film is divided, as well as in a cameo in one of the first scenes of the film.
  • The film features almost the entire lineup of the Romani folk punk band Gogol Bordello, founded and led by Eugene Hütz, who played the role of Alex. This ensemble meets Jonathan at the train station in Ukraine.
