What's left behind the scenes

  • The film contains several references to Ernest Hemingway's novel “The Sun Also Rises” (1925). This is the book the character played by David Oyelowo grabs before leaving his hotel room. Charlize Theron's character gets rid of a photograph showing Edgerton's character participating in a bull run at the festival in Pamplona, which is mentioned in the book. Furthermore, like Hemingway's novel, the film tells the story of an American traveling through a country where Spanish is the main language. Finally, Oyelowo's character opens a “Harry's Bar” – a type of establishment that Hemingway frequented in both New York and Venice.
