- The film was based on the novel 'Tony and Susan' by Austin Wright, published in 1993.
- Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal were supposed to star together in a film called Ezekiel Moss, but the project was cancelled due to the death of its director, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
