- Frank Capra first learned about the play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, on which this comedy is based, in New York in 1937, when he came there for the premiere of his film 'Lost Horizon'. Capra approached Harry Cohn (1891-1958), one of the founders and the director of Columbia Pictures, with the idea of buying the rights to adapt it for the screen. Cohn gave a categorical refusal. Firstly, he considered the sum of $200,000 to be too high. Secondly, he hadn’t yet recovered from disagreements with Capra over the final editing of 'Lost Horizon', where the director had the final say. Capra himself held a grudge against Cohn due to disputes over the film 'The Gay Divorcee' (William A. Seiter, 1935) starring Jean Arthur (1900-1991).
- During the filming of the movie, Ann Miller (1923-2004) was only 15 years old. Her character had to strike various ballet poses, which were painful for the girl to perform. Miller did everything that was required, then ran off the set, hid in a quiet corner, and cried from the pain. James Stewart (1908-1997) once noticed that she was crying. He didn't know the reason, but from then on, he would occasionally order sweets for Miller, which were delivered to the set by the boxload.
- Shortly before filming began, Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954) was confined to a wheelchair due to a broken hip and arthritis. The script was rewritten so that Barrymore filmed using crutches, as his character supposedly dislocated his ankle.
