What's left behind the scenes

  • One of four films produced by Adam Sandler as part of a deal with Netflix, a provider of streaming movies and series.
  • The fifth collaboration between Adam Sandler and Terry Crews.
  • Adam Sandler's first Western film.
  • The film's budget is estimated at $60 million.
  • The fourth collaboration between Julia Jones and Taylor Lautner.
  • Canadian actor and comedian Norm Macdonald played a cameo role in the film. Appearing on screen, Macdonald imitates the speech of Slim Pickens, who starred in numerous Westerns. In one interview, Macdonald admitted that he is particularly good at parodies of Pickens, but the opportunity to portray him doesn't come often.
  • The film is set in 1875.
  • The trailer for the film uses music from the ballet "Rodeo" (1942) by composer Aaron Copland.
  • On April 23, 2015, Indian Country Today Media Network reported that approximately ten actors and actresses of Native American descent, as well as the film's Native American cultural consultant, had left the set in protest of how the film depicted Apache culture. Later, The New York Daily News reported that only four out of over a hundred Native American actors had left the set. Lauren Anthony from the Navajo Nation reservation and film school student Allison Young stated that they left the set because the film portrayed Native Americans in a negative light, and that there should be a limit to satire. According to Anthony and Young, they did not want to tolerate the way women were depicted derogatorily in the film. A Netflix representative responded that the word "ridiculous" is in the film's title for a reason – because that's what the whole film is. It is a satire mocking Westerns and their stereotypes. The cast was intentionally made up of representatives from different nationalities. Who better than them to understand what's what? On May 4, The New York Daily News quoted Ricky Lee, one of the Native American actors involved in the film, who claimed that previous reports were exaggerated and that only four people actually left the set, but 150 extras remained, including women, the elderly, and children. Many then got the impression that shortly before a wrap party, Adam Sandler approached Lee and some other actors with a request to refute the earlier reports. Lee admitted that the departing actors raised valid concerns, but noted that they should have been raised "elsewhere."
  • Approximately 45 minutes into the film, behind the barber, you can see a humorous "Wanted for Bank Robbery" poster featuring the faces of Tommy, Ramon, Little Pete, and Barro. About 15 minutes later, the same poster depicts all six brothers (Tommy, Ramon, Chico, Herm, Danny, and Little Pete).
