What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot was inspired by the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, when the “Führer” Panzergrenadier Battalion of the “Das Reich” division slaughtered the population of the village of the same name: men, women, and children (a total of 642 victims), which became the largest mass killing of civilians committed by German troops on French territory throughout the history of France.
  • The film was shot in the village of Bruniquel, in the department of Tarn and Garonne, and in the city of Montauban.
  • Upon the film's release, Philippe Noiret became the first actor to receive a César Award for Best Actor.
