The plot was inspired by the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, when the “Führer” Panzergrenadier Battalion of the “Das Reich” division slaughtered the population of the village of the same name: men, women, and children (a total of 642 victims), which became the largest mass killing of civilians committed by German troops on French territory throughout the history of France.
The film was shot in the village of Bruniquel, in the department of Tarn and Garonne, and in the city of Montauban.
Upon the film's release, Philippe Noiret became the first actor to receive a César Award for Best Actor.
