  • The film is based on Philip K. Dick's novel "A Scanner Darkly" (1977).
  • One version of the script was written by Charlie Kaufman. However, his script was rejected at one stage of the project's development.
  • In the early 1990s, Terry Gilliam wanted to direct the film.
  • When Fred goes to the liquor store, you can notice the "St. Ubik" brand. This is a reference to Philip K. Dick's novel "Ubik".
  • Philip K. Dick dedicated the novel of the same name to deceased and seriously ill friends who were drug addicts, as evidenced by the credits at the end of the film.
  • When Arcturus sits on stage awaiting the announcement of his performance, one of the guises the suit takes on is that of Philip K. Dick.
