What's left behind the scenes

  • Rumor has it that the idea for the film originated with Jean-Claude Van Damme after he spent his “second honeymoon” in Africa with his fourth wife, Darcy Lapierre. They were celebrating the restoration of their relationship after a long quarrel.
  • Abd El Kim, the leader of the Arab rebels in the film, did indeed fight the French at the beginning of the 20th century, but only in the mountains, not in the desert.
  • Eight years before the film's release, Jean-Claude Van Damme had already starred in a film dedicated to the French Foreign Legion – "The Misfit" (1990).
  • In the credits, German singer Ute Lemper performs the 1936 song "My Legionary".
  • Filming took place in Morocco from October to December 1997.
