What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the 1941 novel of the same name by Patrick Hamilton, whose plays were the basis for such famous psychological thrillers as "Gas Light" and "Rope." The screenplay by Barre Lyndon contains some significant differences from the novel, in particular, the action is moved from pre-war London in 1939 to Victorian London in 1899, and the main character is transformed from a socialite alcoholic into a professional composer.
  • Stephen Sondheim stated that this film inspired him to write his "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
