- The film was initially planned for release in November 2017, but the release date was later pushed back by a year to avoid box office competition with another project from Sony Animation – Timothy Reckart's 'The Star' (2017).
- In the original, the Grinch steals Christmas, not New Year's.
- Initially, it was assumed that Benedict Cumberbatch would use his normal voice when voicing the Grinch. The actor managed to convince the project's creators that since all the other characters spoke with American accents, the Grinch should have the same pronunciation.
