Short description

Sandy Ricks is sent by his mom to Coral Key, a rustic island in the Florida keys, to spend the summer with his uncle Porter Ricks. Sandy dislikes everything about his new environment until a new friend comes into his life, a dolphin named Flipper, that brings uncle and nephew together and leads Sandy on the summer adventure of a lifetime.

What's left behind the scenes

According to the script, Elijah Wood (Sandy) was supposed to have his first on-screen kiss in the film. The scene was shot, but did not make it into the final version of the film.
Luke Halpin played the main role of Sandy in the original 1963 film and its sequels and popular television series. In memory of this, he was given a small role in the 1996 remake.
Three different dolphins – Jake, Fatman, and McGiver – were used as Flipper during the filming of the movie. Currently, all three of these dolphins can be seen and even swum with at the educational and entertainment center "Dolphin Encounters," located in the Bahamas.
