What's left behind the scenes

  • In late 2015, Christian Bale was cast in the lead role. This would have been his first work with director Michael Mann after the action film "Public Enemies" (2009), however, Bale left the project, deciding he wouldn't have time to gain weight before filming began, and Hugh Jackman was cast in his place, who was eventually replaced by Adam Driver.
  • Michael Mann had dreamed of making this film for around 30 years. According to an article dated 1993, Mann wanted to shoot this biopic with Robert De Niro in the lead role after the 1992 action drama "The Last of the Mohicans".
  • Adam Driver was not allowed to drive the original racing cars featured in the biopic. However, Patrick Dempsey was allowed to drive copies of some of the open-top vehicles.
