Short description
Greed, revenge, world dominance and high-tech terrorism – it's all in a day's work for Bond, who's on a mission to protect a beautiful oil heiress from a notorious terrorist. In a race against time that culminates in a dramatic submarine showdown, Bond works to defuse the international power struggle that has the world's oil supply hanging in the balance.

What's left behind the scenes

  • This was the first film to use Dolby Digital EX 6.1 surround sound technology.
  • This was the last film in which Desmond Llewelyn played the role of Q, a role he had played since 1963 (From Russia with Love). In this film, Q introduces Bond to his successor (actor John Cleese), whom Bond jokingly calls R (the next letter of the English alphabet). Llewelyn died in December 1999.
  • Filming took place in the United Kingdom, Spain, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.
  • When it became known that filming would take place near the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service, MI-6 tried to prevent it, but all objections were dismissed by Foreign Secretary Robin Cook (1946-2005) at the insistence of then-Member of Parliament Janet Anderson.
  • Filming the scene where Pierce Brosnan's character grabs for the cables on the Millennium Dome required a great deal of effort from the stunt performers. To emphasize how much work it took to film, director Michael Apted specifically left in the film shots of the hero trying to grab the cables but missing.
  • While underwater, Agent 007 adjusts his tie – this moment was not in the script; Pierce Brosnan came up with it himself.
  • In the scene where Bond looks at those present through X-ray glasses, the actors were initially filmed in normal clothes, and then in transparent clothing, after which the images were combined.
  • Denise Richards gladly played the role of Dr. Christmas Jones, believing her character was different from typical "Bond girls." The public disagreed, and Christmas Jones is often called the worst "Bond girl." This is the first film in the Bond series to win a Golden Raspberry Award for "Worst Supporting Actress," and Denise Richards won it.
  • Even before filming began, the set-up of the filming location in Turkey had already almost finished. Once, an explosion occurred in Istanbul just when director Michael Apted was in the city, and after that, all scheduled filming in Istanbul was moved to other locations. None of the actors involved in the film ever made it to Istanbul. The scenes on the pier near the Elektra Palace were filmed at Pinewood Studios against green screens.
