Kevorkian's ideas were strongly condemned by the medical community and the US authorities. In 1991, Kevorkian was stripped of his medical license. He subsequently faced trial four times, but was acquitted due to insufficient witness testimony. In March 1999, Jack Kevorkian was charged with second-degree murder after performing euthanasia on 52-year-old Thomas Youk of Oakland County, who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease. As irrefutable evidence, the prosecution presented a video recording of the euthanasia itself, which, at Jack's own request, was publicly available. The court sentenced Kevorkian to a prison term of 10 to 25 years in a Michigan correctional facility. On June 1, 2007, for good behavior, the State Parole Board released 79-year-old Jack Kevorkian two years early, with the following restrictions: not to assist anyone in dying by euthanasia; not to provide care for individuals over the age of 62; and not to have close contact with individuals with congenital physical disabilities.
