What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the eighth Bond film shot in Italy – this time, filming took place in the city of Matera. Previous films: 'From Russia with Love' (Terence Young, 1963) was filmed in Venice; 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) was filmed in Sardinia; 'Moonraker' (Lewis Gilbert, 1979) was also filmed in Venice; 'For Your Eyes Only' (John Glen, 1981) was filmed in Cortina d'Ampezzo; 'Casino Royale' (Martin Campbell, 2006) was filmed in Venice and on Lake Como; 'Quantum of Solace' (Marc Forster, 2008) was filmed in Siena and Talamone; and 'SPECTRE' (Sam Mendes, 2015) was filmed in Rome.
  • This is the first film in the franchise shot with an IMAX camera. Previous James Bond films shown in IMAX theaters had to be converted to the required format.
  • At the time of its release, this was the most expensive film in the franchise. The previous record was held by Sam Mendes' 'SPECTRE'.
  • Eight examples of the classic grey Aston Martin DB5 car, used by James Bond, were specifically developed and created for the stunts in the film.
  • Ana de Armas (who played Paloma) worried that she would perform poorly in the action scenes because she was given only three weeks to prepare for them, and she told director Cary Joji Fukunaga this so often that he instructed her to repeat the same phrase in the film during a conversation with Bond, played by Daniel Craig. As a result, the phrase remained in the film.
  • It is claimed that Daniel Craig, who played agent 007 James Bond, personally insisted on Ana de Armas being cast as Paloma. Craig and de Armas had previously worked together with Ryan Johnson on the detective comedy "Knives Out" (2019), which was released approximately four months before the originally scheduled release date of the action film "No Time to Die".
  • In January 2021, the film's sponsors demanded reshoots of some scenes, guided by product placement considerations (this is a form of hidden advertising, where viewers see not advertising, but well-chosen props). Some products shown on screen had become outdated due to the film's 18-month release delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic. For example, the Nokia smartphone featured in the advertisement (in the scene with Nomi, played by Lashana Lynch) had become significantly outdated during the delay (smartphones generally age quite quickly, due to the speed at which new models appear on the market). On the poster, the outdated smartphone model was replaced with the latest one (this was done using computer technology), but the original model remained in the film.
  • Director Cary Joji Fukunaga wanted to film a stunt with bicycles in the Italian city of Matera. Stunt coordinator Lee Morrison designed a bicycle jump over a wall. It was performed by Paul Edmondson – he rode a bicycle up a ramp at a speed of approximately 37 km/h, flew over the wall, and landed safely.
  • Christoph Waltz was once again cast as Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the villain and long-standing enemy of James Bond. Waltz's return to the role of Blofeld was intended as a surprise for fans of the Bond franchise, but the actor was spotted on set and reportedly even told a random passerby who noticed him: "You didn't see me here." Once the news spread, Waltz's involvement in the film became part of the promotional campaign, and the character he played appeared in the film's trailers.
  • The role of the Russian scientist Obruchev, played by David Dencik, was originally intended to be less significant, but director Cary Joji Fukunaga was so impressed with Dencik's performance that the role was expanded and every effort was made to increase the character's screen time.
  • Rami Malek almost didn't get the role of Safin because his representatives weren't responding to calls from the future film's producers. Debbie McWilliams, who was in charge of casting, met with Malek at a preview of Brian Singer's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) – where Malek played the role of frontman Freddie Mercury – and arranged for him to come to auditions. The actor agreed on the condition that the villain he was to play wouldn't be too stereotypical.
  • It is claimed that during the filming of complex scenes in this film, Daniel Craig relied mainly on stunt doubles and stunt performers. This happened due to the actor's age and an injury he sustained while filming Sam Mendes' action movie "Spectre" (2015), the twenty-fourth film in the Bond series.
  • At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film in the franchise. The previous record was held by Sam Mendes' "007: SPECTRE."
  • Director Cary Joji Fukunaga wanted to film a stunt with bicycles in the Italian city of Matera. Stunt coordinator Lee Morrison developed a bicycle jump over a wall. It was performed by Paul Edmondson—he rode a bicycle up a ramp at a speed of approximately 37 km/h, flew over the wall, and landed safely.
