Sean Penn was originally cast as Kane's teacher but left the project due to serious disagreements with director Michael Gottlieb. After the film's release, the actor sharply criticized it, stating that the film had considerable potential that ultimately remained unrealized. Following his departure, the role went to then-relatively unknown British actor Daniel Craig.
Paloma Baeza, who played King Arthur's younger daughter, Princess Katie, is actually six months older than Kate Winslet, who played the role of the elder daughter, Princess Sarah. Both are five years older than Thomas Ian Nicholas, who played Kelvin in the film.
The filming of the majority of the film, which takes place in the sixth century at King Arthur's court, took place in Budapest and its surroundings. The baseball game scenes were filmed on the sports field of the American London Central High School, located in the town of High Wycombe near London. Students at the school were allowed to visit the set and audition for a number of minor roles.
The film's release in American theaters was accompanied by the Disney short film "Runaway Brain" (1995), which later received an Oscar nomination.
